Hiroshi Komiyama became Chairman of the Institute of Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc., President Emeritus at the University of Tokyo in April 2009, after completing four-year presidency at the University of Tokyo. In addition to these roles of his positions, he is actively engaged in promoting a sustainable society as President of Platinum Society Network, which is a Japanese non-profit organization that aims to find solutions to global challenges through community-based actions.
He was appointed as the 28th president of the University of Tokyo in April 2005, after serving a year each as vice-president and executive vice-president in addition to serving before that as Dean of the School of Engineering from 2000-2002. Dr. Komiyama received his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees all from the University of Tokyo in chemical engineering respectively in 1967, 1969, and 1972. From 1973 to 1974, he was a post doctoral fellow at the University of California at Davis. He became a full professor in the University of Tokyo's Department of Chemical System Engineering in 1988. Dr. Komiyama specializes in chemical engineering, advanced material engineering, and global environment engineering. His research work and papers have received awards three times from the Society of Chemical Engineers of Japan.
