Sustainability of Climate Mitigation and Adaptation: Resource Depletion
Sarah Jehaan Khan highlighted the role of women in addressing environmental and climate challenges. Their dependence on natural resources leads to both their vulnerability and their being valuable source of solutions. It is important that they are trained in four eco-friendly methods that tackle and prevent the effects of climate change: rainwater harvesting, composting, organic farming, and kitchen gardening. For instance, chakwal rainwater harvesting enables girls to attend school, reduces maternal mortality, and provides livelihoods. Mobilizing women increases the sustainability of climate solutions.
To end, Ms. Khan suggests an overhaul of the political system to ensure the full integration of women, especially from indigenous communities, in policy design and implementation. There should be a gender quota to guarantee women's participation. Ignoring the gender dimension of climate change issues means that you are part of this problem.
