In his welcome remarks, Justice Kamal Kumar highlighted the constitutional right of every Fijian to a clean and healthy environment and the Fijian government's commitment towards providing a safe, sound, and healthy environment for everyone. He thanked the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme for choosing Fiji to be the host of this conference, the first ever international judicial conference held in the Pacific. He then emphasized that the environment and climate change issue affects all countries, regardless of their economic development status, and reminded the participants about the judiciary's role in protecting everyone's right to a safe and healthy environment. He ended by exhorting the participants to ensure that the environment is safe for children and future generations to live in peace and harmony.
