ADB Distinguished Speakers Program: James Mirrlees
In this presentation, Professor James Mirrlees, Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at the University of Cambridge and Master of Morningside College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, spoke about poverty and redistribution in emerging economies. He highlighted various types of poverty alleviation programs and the central role of information in program design. He also asserted that subsidies such as cash transfers using local and other information, free schools, health care, basic pension, child allowances, social housing, and local public goods like water, sanitation, and roads, can speed up the process of eliminating poverty.
