Mr. Karl Fjellstrom has worked on urban transport planning projects and policy around Asia, focusing mainly on public transport and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), but also working on pedestrian and bicycle facility planning, greenways, bike sharing, parking, urban planning, and TOD. He has worked full time with ITDP since 2003, and has been managing the ITDP-China office in Guangzhou since 2004. Asian cities that he has worked in for more than two months include Guangzhou, Yichang, Manila, Vientiane, Kuala Lumpur, Lanzhou, Harbin, Changzhou, Surabaya, Jakarta, Bangkok, Dhaka, and Ahmedabad.
Mr. Fjellstrom was team leader for the BRT planning and design in Guangzhou (2005-2010), and in addition to managing ITDP's China and Indonesia program, he was team leader for the Asian Development Bank-funded detailed BRT detailed preliminary design in Vientiane (2014) and Yichang (2012-2014), and team leader for BRT conceptual and preliminary design studies in Kuala Lumpur (2012), Jiuquan (2013), Johor Bahru (2013), and Ulanbator (2011). He was team leader for the ADB's sustainable transport study in Harbin and Changzhou (2007), and of ITDP's work on the Lanzhou BRT design (2009-2011). During 2005-2010 Mr. Fjellstrom was the lead international expert on the Guangzhou BRT planning, design, and implementation. In 2011 he was awarded the Guangzhou Friendship Award, which is the highest honour granted to foreign experts by the Guangzhou City Government. Most recently in 2015, Mr. Fjellstrom is the team leader for ITDP’s ongoing work on sustainable transport improvements in Manila.
