Nature Finance Taxonomy: A Discussion Towards a Common Understanding and Scaling Impact
28 October 2026

Armenia

The roundtable highlighted the need to accelerate and consolidate efforts to halt and reverse nature loss in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), noting that the global biodiversity finance gap exceeded $700 billion annually. It underscored the importance of establishing greater clarity and coherence around common principles for nature investment to accelerate impact. Drawing lessons from the development of climate finance taxonomies, metrics, and Paris Alignment principles, the discussion explored how similar approaches could help strengthen investment targets and mobilize private sector finance.

The roundtable convened multilateral development banks (MDBs), international financial institutions (IFIs), policymakers, technical experts, and financial institutions to advance a common understanding of nature finance taxonomies and their potential to guide nature-positive and net-zero investments. Participants shared lessons and practical examples from MDBs, IFIs, and the private sector.

By connecting technical definitions with operational pathways, the discussion sought to support the development and adoption of common principles for nature finance. It also provided a platform for MDBs, IFIs, private sector representatives, and think tanks to engage in public dialogue on scaling up nature finance.
