Series: Joint Multilateral Development Bank Pavilion Energy Transition – Solutions to Biodiversity Impacts 27 October 2026 Armenia The transition to low-carbon energy systems required a major expansion of renewable energy generation and power networks, which could have significant biodiversity impacts if not properly planned, designed, and managed. At the project level, a growing range of approaches was being used to avoid and reduce these impacts. The panel brought together ADB clients, civil society organizations, and field biodiversity experts to share practical experience and innovative solutions, including shutdown-on-demand systems and bat deterrent technologies at wind facilities, as well as bird flight diverters and the undergrounding of existing distribution lines in sensitive locations. The discussion focused on implementation lessons, the effectiveness of different mitigation approaches, and how monitoring, innovation, collaboration, and adaptive management could help reduce impacts on birds and bats as renewable energy and power networks expanded. ADB’s Energy Policy supported the transition to sustainable and resilient energy systems and a low-carbon future in Asia and the Pacific. ADB’s Environment Action Plan 2024–2030 and Environmental and Social Framework also strengthened the integration of biodiversity considerations into ADB operations. The session was particularly relevant to KMGBF Target 8, which called for climate action to minimize negative and foster positive impacts on biodiversity, as well as Targets 1 and 4 on biodiversity-inclusive planning and threatened species. The discussion examined implementation lessons and the evidence needed to support more effective biodiversity mitigation as the energy transition accelerated.
