Philippines: Panabo Coast

The Panabo Coast along the Davao Gulf in Mindanao is a coastal wetland system composed of intertidal mudflats, mangroves, estuarine waters, seagrass beds, and aquaculture ponds. While not formally protected, the site supports significant migratory waterbird populations, including globally important records of the critically endangered Chinese Crested Tern Thalasseus bernsteini, which exceeds the 1% flyway population threshold at this location. Other globally threatened shorebirds, such as Far Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis and Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris, also occur regularly during the nonbreeding season.

Beyond its importance for migratory birds, the site provides critical ecosystem services, including fisheries that support local livelihoods, as well as coastal protection and flood regulation. However, the wetland system is under increasing pressure from industrial expansion, port development, aquaculture, and pollution, highlighting the need for strengthened site management, targeted habitat restoration, and sustainable livelihood interventions to maintain ecological integrity.
