Event: Regional Flyway Initiative Site Studies Mongolia: Tashgain Tavan Lakes View File Tashgain Tavan Lakes is a cluster of steppe lakes located in Khalkhgol soum, Dornod aimag, covering approximately 53,300 hectares within the Mongolian Manchurian steppe biome. The site consists of several shallow lakes surrounded by reedbeds, marshes, and boggy meadows within a feathergrass steppe landscape, and is recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and a provincial nature reserve. It supports significant populations of migratory waterbirds within the East Asian Australasian Flyway, including species exceeding one percent of their flyway populations, such as Swan Goose, White-naped Crane, and Common Pochard. The site provides important provisioning and cultural ecosystem services, including freshwater resources, grazing land, and emerging tourism opportunities that support local livelihoods. However, increasing pressures from agricultural expansion, livestock overgrazing, steppe fires, and climate-related drying are degrading habitats and water quality. Priority actions include strengthening site management and zonation, improving rangeland and grazing practices, enhancing biodiversity monitoring and protection, and developing nature-based tourism aligned with conservation objectives.
