Conflict in the Middle East and Implications for Food Security in Asia and the Pacific

Author / Speaker

The presentation examines how escalating conflict in the Middle East could affect food security across Asia and the Pacific by disrupting global energy, fertilizer, and food supply chains. It highlights how rising fuel and fertilizer costs, trade route disruptions, and increased commodity price volatility can raise food prices, reduce agricultural productivity, and place additional pressure on vulnerable populations, particularly in food-importing countries. The discussion also explores policy and investment measures to strengthen food system resilience, including regional cooperation, climate-resilient agriculture, improved nutrient-use efficiency, and support for farmers and agrifood enterprises.
