The session summarizes the key findings and recommendations of the Knowledge Product  "Sustainable Finance for Asia and the Pacific: Protecting and Restoring  Coral Reefs" jointly published by ADB and The Nature Conservancy. The knowledge product reviews the benefits of coral reefs, the risks faced by coral reefs, and opportunities to sustainably finance the protection and restoration of coral reefs in Asia and the Pacific. It discusses specific actions that can be taken to ensure effective management of coral reefs, both of degraded reefs and of reefs damaged by disaster events. Taking inspiration from the first-ever insurance policy taken out against coral reefs in Quintana Roo, Mexico in 2019, similar opportunities for a coral reef insurance policy are explored in Asia and the Pacific. This publication leaves readers with a clear roadmap for exploring opportunities for a coral reef insurance policy in Asia and the Pacific, alongside other innovative funding sources, to ensure coral reefs in the region are effectively managed.
