Opportunities and Challenges of Eco-compensation in the People’s Republic of China

Eco-compensation has developed rapidly in the People’s Republic of China, with eco-compensation mechanisms being integrated into ecological civilization reforms and poverty reduction programs. At least 20 provinces have already issued their respective provincial policy paper on the implementation of eco-compensation. Yet, funding and performance evaluation remain major challenges in the implementation of eco-compensation programs.
