The number of countries adopting the Right to Information (RTI) or Freedom of Information has grown from just 14 countries in 1990 to 116 at present and it is still increasing. This upward trend started from 1997 and holds true for all regions. RTI is now recognized as a basic human right but has been recognized as such only in the last 10 years.
