A legacy from the economic and financial crisis, non-performing loans (NPLs) affect countries differently but is a burden for the euro area. Though Internal workout by banks and pressure by micro-supervisors are always necessary, they are not sufficient. The creation of well-designed asset management companies can help achieve an orderly and rapid resolution of NPLs.
