Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Potential and Clean Development Mechanism Possibilities for Solid Waste Management in Five Case Study Cities
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) implemented a regional technical assistance, TA 8566: Mainstreaming Integrated Solid Waste Management in Asia, to conduct an assessment of solid waste management practices in five case study cities (CSCs) in Asia and to provide recommendations and best practices that can guide municipalities, ADB project officers and others on how to improve proper waste management and achieve a clean, livable city.
This report reviews the greenhouse gas emission reduction potential through solid waste management in the five cities, namely Buriram (Thailand), Mahasarakham (Thailand), Mandalay (Myanmar), Quezon City (Philippines), and Sorsogon (Philippines). It also explores possibilities for tapping into the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to reduce emissions, providing background into the current state of the CDM market and relevant CDM methodologies for solid waste management that are approved by the UNFCCC or United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Assessments on the potential of the proposed solid waste management projects for each city are described based on the existing scenario of waste disposal.
