Virtual Workshop on Hydrogen in Decarbonization Strategies in Asia and the Pacific 25 November 2022 Green hydrogen produced by renewable energy can help tackle sustainability challenges in sectors such as transportation, building development, and power generation, and enable larger-scale penetration of variable renewable energy when combined with emerging low-carbon technologies. Yet, global investment in hydrogen is still very small compared to investments in renewable energy, mainly due to its high cost, particularly for green hydrogen. However, the cost of green hydrogen is expected to significantly decline by 2030-2050. Asia and the Pacific is leading the way in hydrogen investment, accounting for over 50% of the global total in 2021, and the move toward a hydrogen society in which hydrogen plays a vital role in daily life and economic activities. What is more, Australia, Japan, India, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and a growing number of countries in the region are proposing national hydrogen strategies to accelerate decarbonization. Cohosted by ADBI and the Applied Energy Symposium, this virtual workshop featured new research examining hydrogen society development and decarbonization in Asia and the Pacific. It was held as part of the 8th Applied Energy Symposium on Low Carbon Cities & Urban Energy Systems 2022. Objectives: Discuss hydrogen society development, its decarbonization implications, and investment needs in Asia and the Pacific Explore national hydrogen strategies and policies and economic models for promoting hydrogen growth Spotlight case studies on hydrogen energy use, feasibility studies, and future projects See more about this ADBI event here.
