Virtual Conference on Technology Transfer and Firm Competitiveness 24 to 25 February 2022 Assimilating foreign technology has been crucial to the development and competitiveness of businesses and economies in East Asia. This technology has been obtained through channels such as capital goods importation, reverse engineering, technology licensing, original equipment manufacturers, and labor mobility. Among them, foreign direct investment has increased in importance in recent decades, largely because foreign firms have viewed it as a way to reduce their exposure to technology market failures. This virtual conference will explore the transfer of foreign firms’ technology to local businesses via foreign direct investment in developing Asian countries. The event will assess the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful technology transfers. The focus will be on intrinsic factors such as foreign and local firms’ size and research and development activity, as well as external factors such as their geographical location, composition, and business environment.
