Industrialization and urbanization have led to the degradation of the Tagus Estuary in Portugal. The estuary is the largest and one of the most important natural reserves in Europe. Through the combined initiatives of stakeholders from 19 municipalities, several interventions were applied to clean up the Tagus Estuary, which included wastewater management systems that integrated existing culturally significant structures, green buildings, and high-level technology.
