Online Workshop on Decarbonizing Sanitation for Sustainable Development
Greater flooding, droughts, and sea level rise due to climate change is increasingly affecting wastewater management and water availability. At the same time, sanitation practices such as wastewater treatment are a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions. These dynamics make greater sanitation development in Asia and the Pacific essential for advancing decarbonization and tackling climate change.
Led by Toyo University’s Toshio Aramaki, Yoshitaka Ebie of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan, and Thammarat Koottattep of the Asia Institute of Technology, this ADBI workshop for selected government officials and experts examined keys to decarbonizing the sanitation sector. It focused on related sustainability, health, and environmental challenges and innovations that can support decarbonization in developing Asia and the Pacific.
