The Economics of Restoration: Unlocking Capital for Restoration in Amazonia
29 October 2026

Armenia

The side event will begin with 5 minutes of welcome remarks and framing from an IDB Group representative, setting the context for the discussion and introducing the objectives and current status of the white paper on the economics of restoration in Amazonia. This will be followed by a 5-minute presentation of preliminary findings by Capital Continuum, highlighting key insights on the financing needs and investment opportunities associated with large-scale restoration in the region.

The session will then move into a 40-minute moderated panel discussion featuring representatives from government, the private sector, civil society, and the scientific and intergovernmental community. Panelists will explore the policy and enabling conditions needed to attract restoration investment, the barriers and opportunities for greater private-sector engagement, approaches to ensuring benefits for Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and the role of restoration finance in advancing the Global Biodiversity Framework and COP17 objectives.
The event will conclude with 5 minutes of closing remarks and a forward-looking discussion on next steps for strengthening restoration finance and scaling investment across Amazonia.

The discussion will draw on findings from an upcoming white paper that examines a critical question: what will it take to unlock large-scale public and private investment for restoration in the Amazon, and how can restoration finance contribute to achieving global biodiversity and climate goals? By bringing together policymakers, investors, development partners, and restoration practitioners, the event will explore practical pathways to strengthen the business case for restoration, create finance-ready investment opportunities, mobilize innovative financing mechanisms, and foster the public-private partnerships needed to scale restoration across the region. In doing so, it will contribute directly to global priorities on ecosystem restoration, resource mobilization, and the transition toward nature-positive economies.
