Series: ADB Data Room: Pakistan Resident Mission's Capacity Development Resource Center (PRM CDRC) Development Conference on Flood-Affected Schools 20 March 2025 Karachi, Pakistan The Asian Development Bank (ADB) supported Sindh's School Education and Literacy Department (SELD) to organize the first Development Conference to take stock of the status, share experiences, and discuss monitoring and evaluation capacities required for the school reconstruction efforts. The conference was attended by provincial and district government officials, development partners including the World Bank and JICA, civil society, and engineers. The Minister of Education in Sindh Province, Mr. Ali Shah, emphasized the need for additional financial support to address the unmet reconstruction needs post-flood. The government estimated that $640 million is required to rebuild 14,524 unfunded schools in the province. The event underscored the need for a robust monitoring system to prevent duplication and ensure accurate reporting of reconstruction progress. ADB’s Technical Assistance and Emergency Assistance Loan support the government's efforts. They aim to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation system for the post-flood school reconstruction effort and build the government's capacities. The Development Conference launched crucial initiatives to enhance existing systems for better monitoring and reporting, aiming to improve transparency and accountability in the reconstruction efforts. The conference also addressed the current state and common challenges in rebuilding climate-resilient school infrastructure. SELD and development partners, including the World Bank, UNICEF, JICA, and Save the Children, shared their experiences, lessons learned, and best practices from their school reconstruction efforts.
