Asian Economic Development Conference 2023: Asia’s Recovery and the Future of Globalization

15 July 2023 to 16 July 2023

While globalization has transformed Asia into a driver of economic growth, the region is facing myriad associated challenges such as heightened job insecurity, widening inequality, digital divides, and environmental stress. COVID-19 recovery and the transition to net-zero carbon emissions are further concerns. Together, they are increasing Asia’s need for policies to boost trade, innovation, cross-border migration and investment, financial stability, inclusion and socioeconomic resilience, and climate goals.

Cohosted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), ADBI, and the University of Tokyo, the Asian Economic Development Conference 2023 featured new policy research under the theme Asia’s Recovery and the Future of Globalization. It explored how the region can harness globalization’s benefits to accelerate economic recovery and sustainable development. Keynote speakers were the University of Waikato’s John Gibson, Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry chair and ADBI fellow Shujiro Urata, and the University of Tokyo’s Aya Suzuki.
