Aligning Finance with Nature: How Biodiversity Commitments Influence Investment Decisions
21 October 2026

Armenia

The KMGBF called for financial flows to become progressively aligned with biodiversity goals. For multilateral development banks (MDBs), this raised practical questions about how biodiversity commitments influenced investment decisions and financing conditions. The panel brought together representatives from multilateral financing institutions to share practical examples of balancing biodiversity risks with competing development priorities. Panelists presented cases in which biodiversity considerations had materially influenced investment decisions, project scope or design, financing conditions, or decisions not to finance particular activities, and shared lessons learned.

The discussion focused on lessons learned, innovative financing and risk management approaches, and how development financiers were adapting their policies, partnerships, and project delivery models to support more sustainable development outcomes in a rapidly changing operating environment. ADB’s EAP 2024–2030 aimed to scale up nature-positive investments and mainstream environmental considerations across ADB operations, while ADB’s ESF strengthened biodiversity risk management through ESS6.

The session addressed KMGBF Target 14, on integrating biodiversity into decision-making and aligning financial flows, and Target 15, on assessing and addressing biodiversity-related risks, dependencies, and impacts. It also contributed to COP17’s review of collective progress in implementing the KMGBF.
