The regional technical assistance (TA), Scaling Up Battery Energy Storage Systems for Renewable Energy Integration in Asia and the Pacific, will support developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in expanding the deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to enable greater integration of renewable energy and accelerate climate action across the region. Initially focused on Cambodia, Mongolia, and Viet Nam, the TA will support policy and regulatory development, market assessments, and knowledge sharing to create an enabling environment for wider BESS adoption. The initiative will also help identify future sovereign and nonsovereign investment opportunities through a One ADB approach.

The TA addresses key barriers to BESS deployment, including limited regulatory frameworks, insufficient market incentives, and emerging environmental and technical challenges. It will promote innovative and scalable BESS applications, strengthen private sector participation, and facilitate regional knowledge exchange by sharing lessons and good practices from across DMCs. Building on ADB’s experience in energy storage development, the TA aims to support more resilient, flexible, and low-carbon power systems in Asia and the Pacific.
