Off-grid Renewable Hybrid Energy System in Altai, Mongolia commissioned

On 1 August, ADB and the Government of Mongolia inaugurated an off-grid hybrid solar energy system in Altai soum, in the western Gobi-Altai aimag. The system provides electricity to over 1,500 residents who would otherwise be without power considering the Altai mountains getting in between them and the nearest power source located 400 kilometers away the Altai-Uliastai energy system.

The Altai soum renewable hybrid system is among the projects funded by ADB’s Upscaling Renewable Energy Sector Project in Mongolia which supports the installation of 41 megawatts of distributed renewable energy systems in the country. The project also supports the deployment of innovative technologies like the battery management system and energy management system – the first time to be deployed in Mongolia. More than the demonstration of the viability of such technologies, the project likewise paves the way for the greater diversification of Mongolia of its energy mix.
