First wind power and battery energy storage loan in Thailand signed

The Southern Thailand Wind Power and Battery Energy Storage Project were signed on 18 May 2020 marking the first ever such installation to be constructed in the country. The $7.7 million-equivalent Ioan to the Lomligor Company Limited under ADB’s Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD) will finance a 10-megawatt wind power installation in Southern Thailand that will also utilize a 1.88 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system that will seamlessly integrate wind power into the grid.

The project meets several objectives such as increasing the share of renewables in Thailand’s energy mix, improving the resilience of its power network,  and enhancing the country’s energy security to support economic growth.

The project is expected to generate around 14,870 MWh of electricity per year which will help avoid around 6,364 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually from 2020. The project team is led by Robert Lockhart of the Infrastructure Finance Division, PSOD.
