The Energy Sector Group organized a technology briefing on green hydrogen on 6 October to brief senior management of the technology, the current trends in the sector, and what it implies for ADB. A distinguished panel of speakers provided the depth and breadth of the economics and technical aspects of developing green. Alejandro Nuñez of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology provided the current contexts for hydrogen development and highlighted some of the implications for different world regions. Omar Guerra of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory shared the barriers and opportunities for the deployment of hydrogen technologies in view of 100% renewable energy systems. Thierry LePercq from HyDeal Ambition presented their experience in developing a purely private-sector let project that could be an archetype for gigawatt scale green hydrogen combining upstream renewable energy, mid-stream gas transmission, and downstream industrial end-use. Belen Linares of Acciona presented a pilot project they did in Mallorca, Spain that demonstrated the viability of megawatt-scale grid that powered by renewables and green hydrogen. Jonas Moberg, in his presentation laid down the role of multilateral financial institutions emphasizing on de-risking sovereign risks of green hydrogen initiatives. The Q & A that followed the presentations centered on the key markets in Asia that are either poised or have potential to lift green hydrogen development off the ground in Asia and the Pacific. Countries like the People’s Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea would play a role in either driving the demand or supply of green hydrogen in the region. The event was graced by the attendance of President Masa, MDG Woochong Um and active participation of VPO1 Shixin Chen and VPPP Ashok Lavasa. The Energy Sector Group is planning to hold these briefings every quarter.
