Some staggering numbers and storylines came out of the World Investment Report 2023 published by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on 5 July 2023 which should put efforts for the clean energy transition in perspective. Developing countries need about $4 trillion annually if they are to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), up from $2.5 trillion form when the SDGs were adopted in 2015. The recent trend of increase in renewable energy investments, that increased three times since 2015, went largely to developed countries, the report expounded. Only $544 billion of the $1.7 trillion per year requirement in clean energy foreign direct investment went to developing countries in 2022. Developing countries face $4 trillion investment gap in SDGs
