Profile / Bio

Sivendra Michael is the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change for the Government of Fiji and a leading Pacific voice in international climate and environmental diplomacy. He serves as Fiji’s Chief Climate Negotiator and has led the country’s engagement across major multilateral environmental processes, advancing priorities on climate action, biodiversity conservation, ocean governance and sustainable development.

Michael is widely recognized for his strategic and principled leadership in multilateral negotiations, consistently advocating for ambition, equity and the special circumstances of Small Island Developing States. He has represented Fiji at successive United Nations climate conferences and other high-level international forums, contributing to global policy discourse on climate change, oceans and sustainable development.

He holds a PhD in Development Economics and a Master’s in Econometrics from the University of Auckland. He also holds a Master’s in Environmental Law, and a Master’s in Governance and Public Policy from the University of the South Pacific.
