Shamit Chakravarti

Profile / Bio

Mr. Chakravarti is currently serving as a Director in the Human and Social Development Sector Office (SD3) at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He is responsible for education / TVET, health, and social protection operations across 14 Pacific countries and ADB’s engagement in social protection. Between Sept. 2021 and Oct. 2024, he was ADB’s Country Director in Bhutan.

During his earlier stints with the HSD sector in South Asia and South-East Asia, Mr. Chakravarti designed and implemented technical and vocational education reform projects in Meghalaya, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh in India, in the Lao PDR, and in the Philippines. He has also designed and implemented social protection programs in the Philippines.

Prior to joining ADB in 2003, he worked at the Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2000 to 2003 and the Operations Evaluation Department of the World Bank from 1998 to 2000. He also served as a Lecturer in Economics at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi from 1993 to 1996.
He holds Master's degrees in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and George Washington University, and a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Maryland, College Park.
