Matt Watson

Senior Fisheries Program Manager, Asia Pacific, The Marine Stewardship Council
Profile / Bio

Matt Watson is the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) Senior Fisheries Program Manager for the Asia Pacific, based in Fremantle, Western Australia. He works with MSC’s fisheries teams across the region to advance the program’s vision of healthy oceans and sustainable seafood.

Since 2009, Matt has worked in and around the fishing industry, including time at sea, and is committed to collaborating closely with stakeholders. Whenever possible, he takes the opportunity to spend time on the deck and talk directly with fishers—gaining firsthand insight into what makes each fishery unique. This practical approach helps him develop a nuanced understanding of fisheries’ needs and support positive outcomes across environmental, social, and economic dimensions.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography and Marine Biology from the University of Southampton (UK) and a Master of Research in Sustainability and Climate Policy from Curtin University, Western Australia. He also serves as President of Western Australia Seabird Rescue, an organisation that rescues and rehabilitates more than 2,500 seabirds and waterbirds each year.
