Mario Magaldi – Magaldi Group President and CEO

He transformed his father's Company, founded in 1929 under the name of Cinghie Magaldi, in a world’s leading manufacturer of industrial equipment for the handling of high-temperature materials in severe conditions, used in the production processes of steel mills, foundries, cement factories and coal-fired power plants.

His entrepreneurial commitment began in 1964. From the original idea developed by his father, he started to manufacture the Superbelt®: a special belt conveyor made up of a steel mesh belt, which carries partially overlapping steel pans that form a virtually sealed conveyor. Patented in 1973, the innovative technology represented the first step towards an R&D investment programme that developed several new applications and has generated more than 50 international patents. Currently, the Group counts more than 1000 installations in five Continents and more than 90% of the turnover is achieved abroad.

In 2009 he started to develop STEM® (Solar Thermo Electric Magaldi), which is an innovative CSP technology using fluidized sand as a thermal energy storage medium, to be used as high quality heat or electricity, even at night and off-grid. A first pilot was installed in 2012 on Magaldi Group’s manufacturing premises in Buccino (Italy), while in June 2016 a larger industrial scale plant has been installed in Sicily, in a former oil-fired power plant. The STEM® unit has been successfully operating since then.

Mario Magaldi is Counselor of EPPSA (European Power Plant Supplier Association), Member of COTEC for technology innovation, Member of ZAR Foundation promoting Research for sustainable waste management, Member of CNR Commission for Research Ethics, Cavaliere del Lavoro.
