Johannes Heister is a Senior Environmental Specialist with the World Bank’s Climate Change Department, where he leads the development of a sustainable cooling initiative as part of the Bank’s support for the Kigali Amendment, the Paris Climate Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. Previously, Mr. Heister held positions with the Bank’s Environment and Natural Resources Global Practice, where he focused on climate change projects and phase-down of ozone-depleting substances in East Asia. He was a team leader for policy and methodology in the Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit, where he helped develop methodologies for the Kyoto Protocol flexible mechanisms and establish the Prototype Carbon Fund and other World Bank carbon funds. Before joining the World Bank in 1997, he was a research associate at the Kiel Institute of World Economics. He studied law, philosophy, and economics and holds a Dr. Sc. Pol. in Economics from Kiel University (Germany).
