, Washington University in Saint Louis
Profile / Bio:

Jay Turner is a Professor of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering, and Vice Dean for Education in the James McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis/USA.  He also holds a Visiting Scholar appointment with the Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling Group at Harvard University.  Dr. Turner’s research primarily focuses on air quality characterization with emphasis on field measurements and data analytics to support a variety of applications in the atmospheric science, regulation and policy, exposure assessment, and health studies areas.  He is currently funded by UNICEF to deploy an ambient air quality monitoring network in Bayankhongor (BKH) and indoor air quality monitoring systems for kindergartens and family health centers in BKH and the Bayanzurkh District of Ulaanbaatar.  Current collaborative projects include: examining relationships between air pollution and neurodegenerative disease (South Africa) and child anemia (Haiti); conducting passive and mobile platform measurements to assess the air quality impacts of a neighborhood-scale greening intervention (USA); and developing and deploying a high time resolution monitor for mobile mapping of VOC compounds (USA).  Dr. Turner’s prior work in Mongolia includes consulting to Social Impact for an impact evaluation of the MCA Mongolia Energy and Environment Project Energy-Efficient Stove Subsidy Program, and to Health Sciences University of Mongolia (HSUM) and University of California (UC) Berkeley for future year projections of air pollution control strategy impacts on health burdens.

Dr. Turner currently serves on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chartered Science Advisory Board (SAB).  He is a past president of the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) and currently Air Group Coordinator for the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA).
