Postdoctoral Research Fellow , University of Southampton Profile / Bio Profile / Bio Dr. Evelyn Piña-Covarrubias was previously a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences of the University of Southampton, where she led a study on climate change risks for two basins in ASEAN countries. She previously worked for the Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), providing scientific evidence on land use types within communally owned and managed forests ('ejidos'), to ensure land conservation. Evelyn completed PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton, where she assessed the ecology of large felids and their prey in two small, private protected areas, and the human-wildlife conflict between large felids and local rural populations in the Northern Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. She had also used eco-acoustic techniques to identify illegal hunting in protected areas of Belize. For her master’s thesis (Biological Sciences), she estimated the density of white-tailed deer and characterized its habitat to inform rural communities on the conservation state of local deer populations for management purposes.
