President, International Society of Tropical Ecology Profile / Bio Eklabya Sharma is a renowned Indian ecologist and environmental scientist with over 40 years of expertise in mountain development and biodiversity conservation. He is the President of the International Society of Tropical Ecology and a Strategic Advisor and Distinguished Fellow at the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE). His career is distinguished by his long-standing leadership as the Deputy Director General of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and as the Vice-Chancellor of the TERI School of Advanced Studies. A specialist in nitrogen fixation and climate change impact, he has been a key figure in fostering regional cooperation across the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. In 2024, Dr. Sharma received India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in recognition of his monumental contributions to science and engineering and his lifelong commitment to the ecological preservation of the Himalayas.
