Professor Elvis Au, BBS, is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hong Kong, teaching circular economy, sustainable waste management, and carbon neutrality, among others. He is the former Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government and the former President of the International Association for Impact Assessment. He has over 40 years of experience (including 32 years in the Government) in environmental protection and sustainability. He was the mastermind of many major environmental policies and projects in Hong Kong, including the EIA ordinance, energy efficiency legislation, waste-to-energy facilities, and green procurement and green building policies. In particular, he was responsible for developing the first major waste-to-energy facility for 3000 tons per day of municipal solid waste at a capital cost of HK$19.3 billion, developing and implementing a territory-wide food waste program including the first organic waste treatment facility for 200 tons of food waste per day at a capital cost of HK$1.6 billion, and enforcing the waste electrical and electronic waste control scheme.
